BECIK: Ketika Permainan Menjadi Ruang Belajar untuk Mengenali Bullying

Nia Fernanda

BECIK

When Play Becomes a Space to Learn to Be Better

An educational game based intervention to recognize bullying and practice prosocial, assertive responses for culturally grounded healthy peer relationships.

Bullying Is a Real Issue

Bullying remains a real issue in school environments.

According to the data presented in the BECIK material, 51.82% of students in Indonesia have experienced bullying. Meanwhile, 26% of bullying victims nationwide are elementary school students, the highest proportion compared to other school levels.

This highlights that children need more than just an understanding of what bullying is.

They also need to learn how to recognize situations, understand their impact, and determine how to respond.

From a Problem to a Game

BECIK

Boardgame for Eradicating Cruelty and Instilling Kindness

BECIK was developed as a game based learning medium designed to help children recognize bullying and practice prosocial and assertive responses.

Rather than simply delivering information through theory, BECIK uses the experience of play as part of the learning process.

Children are invited to encounter various situations through the game and learn to choose more thoughtful, value based responses.

Why Javanese Culture?

Because Learning Can Also Begin with Values That Feel Familiar

One of BECIK's key approaches is Cultural Grounding.

Local cultural values are incorporated to increase familiarity, moral reasoning, and children's responses to bullying.

BECIK incorporates cultural values through:

Sapa Aruh
Recognizing and appreciating the presence of others.

Andhap Asor
Embracing humility as part of everyday behavior.

Ngajeni
Building mutual respect.

Guyub
Encouraging togetherness.

Tepa Slira
Considering the feelings and circumstances of others.

Wani Ngelingke
Having the courage to remind others when inappropriate behavior occurs.

These values are used to instill politeness, empathy, and gotong royong, while encouraging positive, respectful, and supportive friendships.

Learning Through Experience

Not Just Knowing, But Trying

BECIK is built upon several complementary learning approaches.

01

Experiential Behavioural Learning

Children recognize bullying situations through game scenarios, practice their responses, and learn from the consequences of their choices.

02

Universal Design for Learning

An approach that provides space for children to understand and respond according to their needs and individual characteristics.

03

Cultural Grounding

Local cultural values are incorporated as part of the learning process.

04

Assertive Action

Children are encouraged to develop more assertive and constructive responses when facing bullying situations.

From Cards to the Game Board

A Learning Experience Built Through Interaction

BECIK features various game components that allow learning to take place through direct interaction.

EMPATHY CARD

Cards that form part of the gameplay experience and support learning about empathy.

ACTION CARD

Cards that present activities and situations related to responding to bullying.

BOARD SPACES

Game spaces that integrate cultural values and behaviors.

The BECIK poster also shows that the cards are available in Indonesian and English.

Learning from the Pandawa

Character Values Inspired by Cultural Stories

BECIK draws inspiration from the Pandawa Lima and cultural characters known through traditional stories.

This approach draws on positive character traits from folklore as part of an effort to build strong and wise character in children.

How Was BECIK Developed?

From Needs to a Learning Medium

BECIK was developed through four stages.

01 — DEFINE

Needs Analysis
Needs were identified through literature review and front end analysis.

02 — DESIGN

Concept Development
The concept for a game based learning intervention medium was developed.

03 — DEVELOPMENT

Building, Testing & Improving
The game was built, tested, and improved.

04 — DISSEMINATE

Sharing the Validated Game
The validated game was then shared with schools and online.

An Approach Built Around Children's Needs

The goal of BECIK is not simply to create a board game.

There are two key focuses behind its development:

  • Creating an anti bullying board game

Based on educational game based learning principles.

  • Integrating local cultural values

To increase familiarity, moral reasoning, and responses to bullying among elementary school children.

What Did They Find?

An Encouraging Early Result

BECIK underwent a validation process using the Learning Object Review Instrument, or LORI.

The validation results presented in the poster show:

4.9 / 5.0

Expert Validation Score

Validator: Child Psychology Expert

In addition, a small trial involving 7 students showed an increase in knowledge scores from approximately 96 to 99. The poster concludes that the small scale trial indicated that BECIK helped children recognize bullying and choose thoughtful, value based responses.

BECIK and the Values It Carries

  • Learning to Recognize
Recognizing bullying situations occurring around them.

  • Learning to Understand
Viewing the issue through values, empathy, and cultural perspectives.

  • Learning to Respond
Practicing how to choose more prosocial and assertive responses.

  • Learning to Build Relationships
Encouraging positive, respectful, and supportive friendships.

A Board Game with a Greater Purpose

BECIK brings together game based learning, Javanese cultural values, behavioral learning, and assertive action within a single learning medium.

Through the game, children are not only encouraged to understand that bullying is wrong.

They are invited to recognize situations, understand values, encounter scenarios, and consider how they should respond.

Through this approach, BECIK is designed as a learning medium that helps foster healthy peer relationships rooted in cultural values.
